THE BASICS: The new guidelines adopted by the International Olympic Committee allow transgender athletes to compete in Olympic events without having to undergo surgery. CNN explains that the new regulations were adapted so as to adhere to current scientific, social and human rights issues, and the IOC hopes that this recommendation blazes a trail for other sports to follow. Whereas Brandon Morse of The Federalist argues it’s unfair to allow women to compete against athletes who were born biologically male, and are therefore likely to have higher muscle mass and lung capacity than cis female athletes; and is therefore an unfair policy to women who have trained all their lives to compete in the Olympics, only to lose out to someone who has an innate physical advantage.
